Visiting pilots in Hawaii are lucky to be able to rent a Cessna 172 aircraft in Hilo on the Big Island and see the approaching lava flows from the Pu'u O'o vent that has been continuously erupting since 1984.  As of this article the lava is creeping its way through the dense Puna district rain forest towards a large subdivision south of Hilo.  Because of the dense rain forest makes hiking to and seeing the lava nearly impossible pilots have the best view for sure!  Jump in a Cessna 172 with a local flight instructor to help with navigation, local weather patterns, and communicating with helicopter tour operators making it possible to see the entire flow just a mere 15 minute flight south of the Hilo airport.
